Description
While studying from da Vinci, Sodoma became keen on the idea of painting contrasting faces to enhance the dramatic effect. He later worked in Rome, where he was deeply impressed by Raphael’s frescoes (both artists painted for the same client). This late work embodies grandiose and expressive goals of the author, and greatly influenced painting throughout Europe. The figure in the turban is Pilate, who presents Christ to the viewer — humble and worthy, an object of contemplation.
