Description
Another walk near the asylum at Saint-Remy, feeling of uneasiness, yet again, and unexpectedly for himself — a still life. “Irises” — the desire for harmony in life. They indeed had a positive effect on the psychological state of the artist.
“Irises” miraculously survived to this day. Van Gogh donated most of his works to his doctors, patients and acquaintances. People did not perceive the paintings of the “madman” as a work of art and did whatever they wanted with them. After Van Gogh’s death, the Irises were handed over to his mother. Still, she never valued her son or his works. Although she left a few of his early works in the attic of the old house, she took “Irises” with her. In 1907 the painting was bought by a collector for 300 francs, and almost 80 years later it went to the museum for an unprecedented price — 54 million dollars.
“Keep your love of nature, for that is the true way to understand art more and more” Vincent
